大部分脊柱转移瘤发生于脊柱的胸段，但也可侵犯腰椎和颈椎。

脊柱转移瘤往往侵犯不止一个椎体。
Tumorsgrowingwithinthevertebraecanmakethespinalbonesweak,causingthemtobreakandcollapse,aconditioncalleda 肿瘤在脊柱骨内生长会使脊柱骨强度下降，导致破裂塌陷，这种情况称为压缩性骨折。这种类型的骨折通常导致背部突然疼痛，同时骨折部位会有明显的触痛。
Thesefractures,aswellasthetumorsthemselves,can 骨折和肿瘤本身一样，会压迫脊柱内和周围的神经，引起疼痛、麻木、针刺感和肌无力，放射到胳膊或腿，称为神经根病变。

根据肿瘤的部位和大小，其它神经症状包括大小便失禁以及肿瘤部位以下的身体瘫痪。
