YannickdeHarlez,IESEGSchoolofManagementRicardoMalague?o,UniversityofEssexAbstractThisstudyaimstorespondtorecentcallsforabetterunderstandingofthefactorsthatsupporttheeffectivenessofformalcontrolpracticesinhospitals.Basedonsurveydatafromtop-levelmanagersinBelgianhospitals,thestudyinvestigatestheperformanceeffectsofthealignmentbetweentheuseofperformancemeasurementsystems(PMS),strategicpriorities,andtheparticularroletop-levelmanagers’personalbackgroundplaysinthiscontext.Thequantitativeresultssuggestthatitisthetop-levelmanagers’personalbackgroundthatbringstolifethebenefitsofthealignmentbetweentheuseofPMSandstrategicprioritiesinhospitals.Specifically,thispapershowsthatwhentheemphasisonpartnershiporgovernancestrategicpriorityishigh,theeffectoftheinteractiveuseofPMSonhospitalperformanceismorepositivefortop-levelmanagerswithaclinicalbackgroundthanforthosewithanadministrativebackground.Thisstudyoffersvalueforpractitionersinthatitsupportstheargumentthathospitalscanbenefitfrominvolvingphysiciansinthetop-levelmanagementteam.
